The president of the Royal Society of Public Health warned that the fashion of large wine glasses has driven an increase in the number of "invisible" calories that people inadvertently consume through alcohol.
Professor Fiona Sim said that the slow increase in the volume of glasses means that few people realize how much they drink and do not know how high the heat of alcohol is.
A 175 ml glass of wine contains about 160 calories, like a Madeira cake, but many bars and restaurants offer 250 ml or even larger wines.
This means that drinking just two large glasses of wine is more calories than a portion of McDonald's fries, exceeding the alcohol intake recommended by women every day.
Professor Xin called for a new law that would force beverage companies and restaurants to include calorie content on bottles and menus.
All packaged food items in the EU must include nutritional information, including the number of calories, since 2011, but the alcohol content is more than 1.
2% is tax free.
"Among adults who drink alcohol, an estimated 10 per cent of their daily calorie intake comes from alcohol," Professor Sim wrote in the British Medical Journal . ".
"With the potential increase in the size of bars and restaurant wine glasses over the past decade, many of us seem to inadvertently increase the amount of invisible calories we consume in alcohol.
"The information provided to consumers must be honest and useful.
Both the beverage label and the menu should include the unit alcohol content and calorie content.
"There is no reason to think that the calories in alcohol are any different from those in food.
"Professor Sim also called on doctors to start asking patients about calorie levels in alcohol and food to better understand the way they live.
Lifestyle and obesity assessments rarely include calories consumed by alcohol.
The EU is considering whether to remove the alcohol exemption and will report in December, but no decision has been reached on the issue so far.
A recent survey found that some of the 2,117 adults surveyed did not know the calorie content of regular drinks, and most did not know at all that alcohol had total calories consumed by them
Most respondents favored labeling calories on alcoholic beverages.
From December 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration has imposed calorie labeling on alcoholic beverages in American chain restaurants with 20 or more branches.
